Anxiety: How to Reduce It with Mindfulness and Bodyfulness
Anxiety is one of the most common mood disorders that many people face in their daily lives. Sometimes you feel anxious about a specific thing like an exam, a meeting with someone, or a medical uncertainty. It may also be that you feel anxious inside even when you know that there is no reason to feel that way. Either way, anxiety has a negative effect on your daily life that you would like to eliminate, preferably without medication. When you find that you are struggling with everything in your daily life because of anxiety, it would be good to get a check-up with your doctor. This article will be helpful for you to better manage the way you manage yourself.
Symptoms of anxiety may include:
- Incessant thoughts and worries.
- Muscle tension and physical pain.
- Insomnia or difficulty sleeping.
- Difficulty concentrating.
- Emotional instability
- Difficulty in acting according to one's own will
Understanding Anxiety with an Example:
Before you can better manage your anxiety you need to understand that anxiety is a dysfunction, that is, an incorrect regulation of a natural function. Let's take eating as an example.. Eating is a natural function that nourishes us to stay healthy and gratifies us emotionally. Everyone must regulate their diet in such a way as to achieve all the purposes of eating. Both those related to lasting health and those of pleasure. If you choose to be guided too much by pleasure, for example by eating a lot of sweets, you begin to develop a dysfunction that manifests itself in your body with various symptoms such as overweight, sleep disorders or sudden drops in energy. These symptoms worsen if you continue to eat badly and over time a pathology develops that can no longer be resolved only through a better lifestyle. Medical or therapeutic help is needed to allow your body to heal, while obviously you must always do your part in regulating yourself better. It works the same way with anxiety. With our mind we can think about things from the past, today and the future. We can think about things that are around us but also about things and people that are completely somewhere else. Our emotions and body react to what we do with our mind to push us into action, but often emotional reactions just create a lot of internal movement in the body that we have trouble managing. This makes us feel stressed or anxious. To be well and healthy we must use our mind and manage our emotions in such a way that we can act in our life according to our will..
Managing the interaction between mind, emotions and body is not an innate ability, such as animals have an innate instinct to regulate their behavior. We need to learn to manage ourselves well, just like we do when it comes to eating, and it’s not by itself that we’ll succeed.
Mind, Emotions and Body: Human Power!
Anyone who suffers from any form of anxiety knows that thoughts, emotions, and the body are connected. You can probably describe what happens in your body when you feel anxious, and you may even know what kind of thoughts make you feel bad. This interaction is natural and leads to joy when you manage yourself well. Take a look at the table below:
Can you see that the two ways of handling the same situation are similar but that one leads to feeling good and the other leads to anxiety? To be able to react well, you too need to learn Mind&BodyFulness.
Mind&BodyFulness: The Winning Combination to Reduce Anxiety
For a complete practical explanation of Mind&BodyFulness you can read the article here. There is also a practical guide to help you practice here.
Mindfulness or being mindful means that you are aware of what is being brought to your mind through your body. You can be mindful of the world around you but also of your inner world.
Bodyfulness or being bodyful means that you are aware of the effects your mind (conscious and unconscious) produces in your body.
Mind&BodyFulness allows you to be the capable manager of this interaction between mind and body
Here's how Mind&BodyFulness can help reduce anxiety:
Let's use the situation in the previous table: tomorrow you have to do a job by yourself for the first time.
- Emotion = Energy
Excitement and agitation are both energy in motion. Excitement is like a river that needs to be channeled and agitation is like the waves that overwhelm. When you are mindful of what is happening in your body you can realize which of the two is present in you. Accept this reality as it is. Then, bodyfulness allows you to recognize how your beliefs impact the physical manifestation of emotion. The thought 'I'll never make it' fuels agitation. The thought 'Thank goodness I've been trained' helps you channel the energy of wanting to do it well. In both cases you have to take control of your reactions with your will! - Acting with the body
Since the manifestations that are challenging or helping you to do your best are inside your body, you can create a change by doing something with your body. Think about what kind of physical stimuli might help you. A walk in nature, a hot shower, lying down for a moment, or something else? When you can produce a better sensation in your body you have the opportunity to break the vicious circle of anxiety. For example, you can calmly breathe a little deeper than usual, while enjoying these physical sensations. - To have thoughts or to think
Many thoughts come to you by themselves, automatically from the unconscious. These are not necessarily the thoughts of your will though. With willpower you can also think different, realistic and constructive, thoughts. In our example you could think this: 'I did well during the training and therefore they trust me. If I also trust me, I can feel better and bring out the best in me.' With this thought you can reinforce the good feeling that you created with, for example, the hot shower or the walk. - The mirror of behavior
Behavior is what you do with your body, driven by what's happening inside your body. Everything you do, does something with you. So if you see that what you do only makes things worse, you have to accept the truth, you are self-sabotaging. Accept this truth even if you don't like it. Stop and then take charge of yourself. If you can't do better, seek help. - Willpower
You don't always have enough willpower to make everything go well. However, the strength you have, you have to use it well. Look at the table above and imagine two people. One who follows the first line and one who follows the second. Read the sentences carefully and notice how both use their willpower well or badly. To feel good about yourself you need to do your best, no more and no less!
